NIKON PHOTO CONTEST 2016-2017: CALL FOR ENTRIES

Announced his week 24th August - Neville Brody inaugurated as Lead Judge, and two new categories - Nikon 100th Anniversary Award and Next Generation Award - established

Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that entries for the Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 will be accepted between October 17, 2016 and 1:00pm (JST) on January 27, 2017.

The Nikon Photo Contest has been one of the world's largest global photo contests since it was first held in 1969. The objective behind the Contest is to nurture an aspirational community that supports photographers and filmmakers who wish to share important stories and influence the way people think through images.

The Nikon 100th Anniversary Award has been added to commemorate Nikon's celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2017. The Next Generation Award, open to those under the age of 30, has been added in response to the fact that roughly half of the entries in the previous Contest were captured or recorded by those under the age of 30. We hope that this new category will help to further extract and encourage the talent of the next generation.  In addition, world-renowned graphic designer and art director, Neville Brody, is to be welcomed as the Lead Judge for this Contest. With his appointment as Lead Judge, Brody also redesigned the Nikon Photo Contest logo. He had the following to say about his role as Lead Judge.

Nikon Photo Contest 2016-2017 Overview - The contest is open to all, professional and amateur, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. All categories will accept entries captured with any digital device, including smartphones, except for the Nikon 100th Anniversary Award.

Nikon Photo Contest, one of the world's largest global photo contests - The Nikon Photo Contest (NPC) is one of the world's most prestigious global photo contests. THE GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY IRELAND EXHIBIT WORKS ON CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM AUSTRIA

Titled: - ‘The Body Politic’

Dates – Opening this week Thursday 25 August – Running until Wednesday 28 September 2016

The Body Politic highlights the strength and diversity of contemporary photography in Austria. The work reflects the concerns of five established and emerging photographic talents:  Karin Fisslthaler uses ‘found’ images to explore rituals and social conventions manifested in film and photography. In her various works series the hands, skin, and faces of movie stars are distorted and concealed to reveal the structural complexities of media representations.  Ulrike Lienbacher interrogates the notion of the body as subject or object. In her series Pin Up Exercises figures dressed in ordinary outdoor clothes subvert stereotypical postures or poses.

The resurgent genre of street photography is reflected in Christopher Mavric’s live and unstaged colour portraits of ordinary Austrians living in Vienna and Graz.  In her series Young Gods Stefanie Moshammer worked closely with disaffected young men to capture their experience of transitioning from adolescence into adulthood.

Erwin Polanc “8820 +/” captures the artist’s experience of growing up in a small village in Austria. Composed of architectural studies and portraits Polanc’s perspective presents a wonderful balance between empathy, bleakness and the comedy of daily life.

The Body Politic exhibition also includes a special focus on the state of the art of photobook publishing, with a curated selection of recent and classic photo books from Austria’s leading publishers.

Culture Night projection: Special curated projection of work from The Body Politic exhibition and contemporary Irish photography from the Solas Ireland exhibition.

Panel Discussion: A panel discussion with artists and curators from FOTOHOF Galerie, Salzburg  will take place at 5pm on Thursday 22nd of September. Booking is advised.

Exhibition is curated by FOTOHOF Galerie in Partnership with Gallery of Photography Ireland.

This cultural exchange programme is supported by Culture Ireland.

LANDSKRONA FOTO FESTIVAL 2016 SWEDEN: PRESENT PHOTOGRAPHY FROM IRELAND

Running this week - More than 150 photographers are represented in 20 odd exhibitions in Landskrona 19–28 August 2016.

Ten days of exhibitions, photobooks, seminars, portfolio reviews, artist talks and more. Since the start four years ago Landskrona Foto Festival has established its position as an international meeting place for photographers and those with an interest in photography. Renowned artists are exhibited alongside new, promising names and much of the work on display have never been shown in Sweden or Scandinavia before. We take photography seriously.

Landskrona Foto: View Ireland - Showing at Landskrona museum – Running until 25 September 2016

In the last two summers, Landskrona Foto has presented the photography and photographers of another country. The series started with Turkey, followed by the Czech Republic, and now in 2016 it is Ireland’s turn – not just the Republic of Ireland but the whole island, including Northern Ireland. The exhibition opens on 30 June and closes one month after the end of Landskrona Foto Festival. Landskrona Foto: View Ireland will be shown in Landskrona Museum.

In this exhibition of photographic history we relate to the visual cliche of Ireland. The image that has stuck on picturesque postcards and in newspaper features, and probably also in many people’s minds.

How have Irish photographers actually viewed their homeland through history, and how do they view their own country today? Which photographers have related to The Image of Ireland? What pictures were never taken?

As far as we know, there is no photographic documentation of one of the greatest disasters the country has experienced. When The Great Famine broke out in 1845, the camera had been known in Ireland for several years, but no one photographed the great famine. A decade later, however, when the county was still suffering the after-effects of the famine, photography was established in a completely different sphere. In the shelter of The Big Houses, upper-class ladies frequently used the new technique.

Over a hundred years later the newspapers were filled with ink from a different trauma. Northern Ireland in the time of the troubles has been depicted by many people, but the media narratives about it have often looked very different. We find a more personal narrative in Patrick McCoy’s series The People’s Taxis (1998). Here we see very close-up portraits of passengers travelling in the black taxis on the Falls Road. The claustrophobic back seat becomes a reflection of the social strains of life in the midst of the conflict.

The exhibition also presents works by: Sean Hillen, Jan McCullogh, Mary Countess of Rosse, Lady Louisa Tenison, Dennis Dinneen, Paul Seawright, Anthony Haughey, Trish Morrissey, Eamonn Doyle, Grace Weir, Laurence McKeown, Arthur Fields, Patrick Hogan, Broomberg & Chanarin, Bertien van Manen and others.

The exhibition is being produced in collaboration with PhotoIreland, Belfast Exposed, Gallery of Photography Ireland and Culture Ireland.

The curators of the exhibition are Jenny Lindhe in cooperation with Angel Luis Gonzalez, Trish Lambe, Tanya Kiang and Ciara Hickey.
