TIPA AWARDS: THE FINEST PHOTO AND IMAGING PRODUCTS FOR 2016 ANNOUNCED |
The TIPA Award
winning products for 2016 were announced last week full details are available
from the website below.
Editors from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA)
member magazines met for their General Assembly on 1st April in San Francisco,
USA to vote for the best photo and imaging products launched by the industry in
the last 12 months. The trophies for the 26th year of TIPA Awards will be
presented to the winning companies during Photokina in Cologne,
Germany on 20th September 2016.
During the meeting the members voted to admit three new
magazines to TIPA: Photo District News and Rangefinder from the USA and Photo
Solution from Canada. With these three new members, there will be 30 leading
photo and imaging magazines in TIPA, from 15 countries on five continents. TIPA
also has a cooperative partnership with the CJPC (Camera Journal Press Club),
representing top photography magazines in Japan.
The four-year terms of three members of the board came to an
end. These were the Chairman, Thomas Gerwers, Secretary, Johan Elzenga and
Treasurer, Louise Donald. The first two stood again and were duly re-elected by
the members. Given that Louise Donald decided not stand for another term, there
was an election to succeed her. The two candidates were Alfonso del Barrio of
FV/Foto-Video Actualidad magazine (Spain) and Roland Franken of digit! magazine
(Germany). Roland Franken won the election and joined the board with Chairman,
Thomas Gerwers, Vice-Presidents, Giulio Forti and Jean-Christophe Bechet and
Secretary, Mr. Johan Elzenga.
The TIPA Awards are renowned as the most influential photo
and imaging product awards in markets around the world. Where products use the
TIPA Awards logo this indicates that these have passed evaluations by TIPA’s
technical committee and magazine editors.
A TIPA Awards endorsement is the highest accolade for any
photo and imaging product.

IRISHLIGHT: A NEW LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL AND COLLABORATIVE IMAGE CREATION PROJECT |
Taking place
throughout Ireland From Sept 26th – Oct 2nd
IrishLight brings Irish and international landscape
photographers together in a new and novel way providing a full week of
interesting events while also creating a unique body of photographs of the
Irish landscape. The project is being
run and has been conceived by former Irish and European professional
photographer of the year Peter Gordon.
The theme of this year’s inaugural event is ‘Atlantic
Reach’, focusing on some of the most iconic parts of the west coast and
the Wild Atlantic Way.
The purpose of the festival is 2 fold. Firstly, there is
education and inspiration for the many many people who love to take pictures of
Ireland. There will be talks throughout
the week, 6 consecutive workshops taking place from Donegal to West Cork over a
2 day period, as well as the final ‘Big Day’ where both domestic and
international speakers will present on a range of topics all landscape
photography related. Secondly, a body of work will be created from the 6
workshops that will show the Irish landscape in a moment in time. The theme of
this year’s festival, ‘Atlantic Reach’, has dictated the locations of these
workshops.
Each workshop will be led by one of the leading lights of
Irish landscape photography (see below). There will be 7 instructors and 44
participants shooting different locations along the west coast over the same
two day period.
Each workshop participant will get expert advice from the
workshop leaders throughout, and one of their images will be chosen for the
IrishLight collection 2016 and presented through media to a domestic and
international audience.

NEW IRISH PHOTOGRAPHY PUBLICATION: WATERFORD A COUNTY REVEALED - BY GEORGE MUNDAY |
”George Munday presents
Co. Waterford as it is and we must be grateful that so much of my home
territory remains as it was when first I explored it on my bicycle” - writes Dervla Murphy in her foreword
to George Munday's book, "Waterford, A County Revealed".
The book takes the form of a journey starting in Waterford
City, ambles through fishing ports and holiday resorts as it heads towards
Ireland’s first Geopark on the Copper Coast. From Dungarvan the journey
continues through Irish-speaking An Rinn then follows the Blackwater River to
the Lismore. Then it’s over the two mountain ranges for the final leg of the
journey finishing at the Suir River Bridge, for a spectacular last view of the
county.
It's taken George Munday a decade of photography, then countless
hours of research to make the book available at a reasonable price. It's
not available through book shops or Amazon; instead it's a POD "Print on
Demand" book. in effect each book is printed to order in hard or softback
versions. It features over 130
photographs with extended captions, over 160 full colour pages. The book is
exclusively available through the online bookshop at Blurb, the large
international company that prints the books.
Full details of the book can be found on the dedicated Waterford Revealedwebsite.
About - George
Munday, is a graduate of Birmingham College of Photography, became a
photo-journalist and morphed into advertising photography before going on to
co-direct the major Irish stock photo agency Slidefile for twenty years. During
that time he photographed the landscape of the island of Ireland for a host of
book publishers, 40 at the last count, but never for his own book
until now.

FINE ART PAPERS DID SOLID BUSINESS AT THE RECENT PHOTOFEST |
Sheldon Long a long-time
supporter of Photofest stated that he had constant sales throughout the day of
Canson paper and Epson printers.
"Having been
absent from Photofest Ireland for a
number of years it was great to be back and while the exhibitor profile had
changed quite a bit, it was great to see
that the level of turn out from the public had not diminished. The Fine Art Papers stand had an impressive
display of customers images on various Canson papers and this certainly helped
with peoples selection of these fine papers."

RTE MOJOCON RETURNS TO DUBLIN THIS WEEK |
RTE is running it’s 2nd
international conference on mobile content creation lined up for Dublin’s Aviva
Stadium on 29th- 30th April 2016
RTE Mojocon is an international mobile journalism conference
aimed at journalists from print, radio, online and television, as well as PR
professionals and media and journalism students. The conference will also
appeal to mobile photography enthusiasts, media executives, and members of the
public with an interest in mobile and social.
When RTE first looked at the idea of organizing a conference
on mobile content creation our focus was very much on the journalism, filmmaking
and photography aspects. However, in the twelve months since RTE Mojocon-1 there has been an exponential growth in
businesses using mobile content creation for their own marketing and
communications. There are many examples
of businesses using “mojo” to create graphics, stills and animations for their
social media channels and even a few exceptional examples where mobiles were
used to create advertising campaigns for TV.
Speakers at RTE MojoCon-2 will include high-profile names in
the global mobile content space from companies such as the BBC, RYOT, Oracle,
Mashable and Aljazeera, and many more.

ZEISS LENS GEARS TURN CAMERA LENSES INTO MOVIE LENSES IN A FLASH |
GERMANY – April
2016 - This month ZEISS introduced a variety of product innovations - Alongside
the established lines ZEISS Compact Primes and ZEISS Compact Zooms, the ZEISS
Lens Gear rings are now opening up the high-quality range of ZEISS camera
lenses to movie-makers. The lenses come in four different sizes – mini, small,
medium and large, and are just perfect for achieving precise results with a
follow focus system on set. The all-metal rings are compatible with all ZEISS
Milvus, ZEISS Otus and ZEISS Loxia lenses. What’s more, the ZEISS Otus and
ZEISS Milvus lenses are presented in a hard case and the ZEISS Loxia lens set
in a soft case.
ZEISS Lens Gears boast impressive versatility and no-fuss
mounting - The ZEISS Lens Gears are made of premium aluminium with a
hardened surface coating, are slid onto the relevant lens and attached to the
focus ring of the lens simply by turning the two opposing rings. “This means the ZEISS Lens Gears can be
attached in a flash – and you don’t even need any tools to do so,” explains
Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses. The ZEISS Lens
Gears are available in four different sizes: mini, small, medium and large. “They fit on the different lenses of various
diameters precisely and securely,” continues Casenave. “Using a follow focus
system enables optimal focusing and the ZEISS camera lenses are equipped with
functions resembling those of a full-fledged movie lens.” This now allows
customers to achieve professional results with the camera lenses and makes any
handling difficulties a thing of the past.
